Turn based zombie survival? what on earth were they thinking
I nearly purchased this game. But after watching gameplay of it... Just.. no. Top down is one thing. Point and click turn based game play in a "Horror" title? Absolutely not. Poor design choice.

Why is everyone thinking that RT would make this game a random zombie-splatter-game? Really? It's just the combat that changes, not the interaction with your characters and the NPCs and anything else this game offers.

First, in my opinion zombies and turn-based combat don't fit together very well, because you've got all the time in the world to figure out your next move. There's no tension, no fear from the walking dead that slowly shable toward you... Your group is trapped in a building an surrounded by zeds? If you've ever seen a zombie movie you'll know that people tend to make hastly decision and not the best plans possible, because they're under pressure. RT can perfectly simulate that. It adds to the immersion and it adds to the suspense.
RT also offers much more possiblities to make the combat more challenging. You'll have to keep an eye out all the time, because zombies could actually surprise you, like in an good ol' Romero movie.

Second, the point of turn-based fighting is that you have enough time for strategic micro-management in a shoot-out. Imagine any turn-based game in RT. It would be very difficult to manage your several teammates at the same time, making sure they're taking cover, not being outflanked by the enemy and not forget to make them use their skills.
But you don't get that fighting zombies. They just kind of walk towards you, not shooting at you, not avoiding your attacks, not flanking you, not doing anything tactical at all. You don't need a turn-based-combatsystem for fighting zombies. That's what the OP means with "poor design choice" I think.

Third, RB relies on things like chance to determine how likely you are to hit a target, jam your gun or cause damage. Again that works fine with anything but zombies. Do you want to leave it up to luck if you get bit or not?

Sure, you're not only figthing zombies, but it's not like RT is a bad thing. I need to stress that it has absolutely nothing to do with shooters like Left4Dead. I just don't believe that RB-combat fits this game or any zombie-games in general.

Now, as an example, I can recomend you the following game: http://www.kongregate.com/games/ConArtists/the-last-stand-dead-zone
Sadly it's lacking the RPG-elements, but it shows how excellent RT combat can work, and how well it works with zombies.
Actually I would love to see both, RT and RB in this game, just like in Fallout Tactics.

Edit:
Another example for an RTS game with zombies where combat works out well (at least better than RB): Project Zomboid. It's quiet easy now to kill lots of zombies but it never turns into a carnage and the devs are working on making combat more difficult.

Why are you wasting your time? Theres 5 pages of opinion that differ from yours. Take the hint, not everyone likes the same things. If a top down shooter is what you want theres plenty to choose from. In this case people want turn based combat. who are you to tell people they are wrong in what they like?

Another example of people who do this would be pen and paper role players you're not visually seeing things happen you're being tactical in your choices. One thing that could help ramp up the tension in the game though is a timer you loss 1 ap every 15 or 20 seconds. To promote quick decision

you have never stired a horde of kobalds with your level 1 Party ... ever turn, every roll of the dice is nail biting .... otherwise we wouldn't be playing

This is the exact game I've wanted since I was a kid when I fell in love with zombies and RPGs.

Yeah it's like me complaining about car games. I may not like them, but that doesn't mean I have any rught to run aroung and call a genre rubbish. Hell, calling it a bad design choice is like calling "The Walking Dead" games as a bad design and after having played season 2, that is a hell of a insult.

You know, they have those. Not a video game, but there are turn-based racing board games.
Design choice lets make a "Goat sim",,,,,,,,,,, it`s freedom of choice thankfully, if you like something fine, if not dont buy it. simple.

Most of the good ones started with turn based, then for what ever reason turned to RT. Rt is good in some cases but turn base is where the real thinkers are.

Its one thing to be able to hit macros and aim and shoot fast but its another animal all together when you have to estimate odds , movement, and rely on character stats and abilities then your own.

I think Turn based + survial is an enjoyable mix.

I enjoy turn based play. As a older player I no longer have the reflexes too play 'fast' games so enjoy the extra reaction/thinking time that these type games give.

Yes its old fashioned and yes you have to think ahead and can't always get what you want immeadiately with out forward planning. But hey thats ok sometimes. Be boring if every thing worked the same.

Don't like it... don't buy it simple.
