as for melee, railroad hammer to OHKO zeds easily, hate to admit it but melee sucks late game so any unique 1hand + shield will do
Mid Game: Baseball Bat vs. Zombies, Police/SWAT shotgun, 9mm as secondary vs. humans (melee falls off quickly mid-late game)
Late game: Laser-sighted Combat Shotgun and Grenades (Late game I found myself fighting humans WAY more than zeds, when I did come across zeds, I'd bring out the Fire Axe)
Favorite past-time: Tossing noise makers/firecrackers in heavy zed infested area, waiting for swarms of zeds (mainly because game lags horribly when trying to pathfind so many zeds at once), running Clifford into the middle of them with a timed explosive and a prayer from Todd. RIP Clifford... RIP...
For ranged attacks, I like keeping things quiet, so bows and arrows, or silenced pistol. For dealing with gun users, since noise is going to ramp up anyways, long barrel magnum, sighted shotgun (or their base variant).
Flareguns and stunguns are fun. Mines + firecracker/noisemaker are great for crowds, if done right. Tear or nerve gas on those who are actually succeptible to it can be pretty awesome, especially if I wasn't expecting a firearm fight.
