Not enough Research Points!
This is something I've struggled with through several playthroughs.

First few times around, I focused on researching new technologies, features, and topics, but as a result, my team's skills suffered as I could never afford to train them as I was saving up for new tech. More recently, I've trained my team up pretty well (mostly 600-800 in their focus), but now my company is a bit behind in tech, as I don't have the Research Points to keep up. Not only that, but I only have two specialists (1 Design, 1 Tech), but only the first tier (as in, just Design/Tech, not Engine/Story/etc).

Yet I read stories here on these forums of people with specialists with skills upwards near 1000 and millions in the bank. I released a few smash hits, sure, but lately my games are getting middling ratings, and all I can figure is because my game engines are a bit antiquated because I can't afford the RP to upgrade. How are people managing to get so many RPs? I do contract work between games as much as I'm able, but that nets maybe 5-8 RPs per contract. With each training session no costing around 30 or 200 RP and new techs costing between 80 and 150 RP...I just can't do it.

do the training sessions that cost 5 Rp and reserach, well, RESEARCH :P. I did that on my main guy ( the boss) he has like base 300 everything so i just leveled my research with him til 500, then u be making LOADS of RP belive me, i actually have too many that i dont know what to do with right now. As for money, im sitting on 65+ mil thanks to "World at War: Future Warefare" :D, i showed it at G3 with the 1+ mil stage demo and it went big, 9.25 to be exact

I thought the Research skill just determined how quickly they researched new tech and generated game reports? What exactly does increasing a dev's Research stat do?

Well, if M0KoL is right (what I assume he is) then Reseach generates Research Points while developing new games (or engines) and the higher the Stat, the higher the chance for research points to be generated.
Good to know btw. now the only thing I don´t know what it does, is speed (although I assume that it increases the speed with which individual project (like research or learning) are finished

If you've already got your R&D lab, throw wads of cash at them without having any active projects, they'll give you a steady flow of research points in return. Also don't be afraid to create some medium games if you've already done some large ones, or large ones if you've already done some AAA ones, they're cheaper and faster to make, and more forgiving for older game engines, while still being able to provide some money, research and experience.
Before you take on smaller contracts put 2-3 of your staff in training for researh increasing skills
Also the later training options are more cost effective with research points but cost more $$$

After you release a game do the game report. Do this for every game. It'll be unlikely you'll ever run out of research bubbles this way.
I avoided researching marketing early on which helps keeps your engines up to date in early game.

Late game train a design specialist ASAP and open a research lab (if you fund it without selecting a project it will produce RP for $$$)

What's the link between marketing and engines?? I don't think there's any. Marketing just allow pay to create a hype, the sooner you do it the longer is the hype but also the lower is your estimate if the game worth it or not. No link with engines, at least I didn't saw any.

I assume he means that he preferred to put the 40 RP you need for marketiing into features for his engines first

Speed increases how fast bubbles are produced while making games if i'm not msitaken. The design / tech points seem to effect speed and multiplyer (multiplyer being when a single bubble has several points)
