It's far from a simple "copy/paste" or "ripoff" of GDS.
They look the same and are easy to jump in one if you've played the other. My 2 cents are that Gave Dev Story was more original, and Game Dev Tycoon is more fun to play if you spend any time with it. The ways games are created has a lot more depth, and I think the recent enhancements will make it even more fun.
They look basically the same and have the same concepts, but the way the game computes sucess is pretty obviously different. So, I loved GDS (which the dev has said is thier template, but GDT improved on the formula. I also own The Show 12 and 13, I bought the second one because of some improvements that made it more fun to play, though they were very similar, and I spent 3x the money on that upgrade. I also like Plague Inc better than the game that was the first in that genre. So, if you like GDS, you will likely like GDT, I'm glad I gave the latter a shot. At least try the demo, at worst it's more of a good thing.
But you really get the idea for how silly complaints like these are when you apply them to other products. For example, how about a Toshiba TV set vs a Sony TV set? Like OMG, one totally ripped off the other. Or my house vs a house on the other side of town. Or the bar in my town vs the bar three towns over. I could go on for a long time, but I think anyone thinking rationally gets my point and I've already written enough to get flamed by everyone else XD
All posts on the official forum concerning the "similarities" got deleted because obviously only "trolls" see the similarities.
Game dev story is itself a copy of another game too so...
This is fixed in the Steam release, I think.
If you are familer with USA game history, get this game.
Doubt a company would sue for plagiarism, when its what kairosoft did in the first place.
Game Dev Story isn't an original idea at all, games similar appeared before and even some was looking better than kairosoft.

Oh yeah, the employees in Game Dev Story would also approach you about adding something to the game your developing which showed initative on their part.
I was hoping Game Dev Tycoon would add more to the idea like maybe allow you to decorate the office to increase worker efficiency and maybe add more interaction with the employees so I can get to know them better. I do like that they add more events like needing to release a patch or making a choice about people who make fan versions of your games.
