They directly copied Game Dev Story and then tried (and failed) to improve on the formula. In making the graphics more HD, they lost all the charm. Their UI is just a collection of Windows Form Controls that are badly themed and positioned. They injected extra options where they could and tried a new mechanic or two, but it just falls flat.

I've spent many hours sinking into Kairosoft's games like Game Dev Story, and could barely stomach more than a couple hours of Game Dev Tycoon. A lot of the success/failure of your game is based on badly-implemented algorithms that reward you for looking up the best combo on a Wiki for near-perfect scores while penalizing experimentation with awful scores.

Honestly, given the choice of the two, I'd pick Game Dev Story any day. Tycoon may have a couple extra things, but I hate rewarding a company for creating a carbon copy with badly-written code and then slapping a few tiny extras in to make it seem like it's an "homage," rather than an attempt at a direct duplicate.

They look a lot of each other, but this one has a lot more things to do and more involvment on the development of the games
Sadly there are some haters who just go out and atack this game for being the same thing, if we would judge all games by that standard we should only buy 20 year old games as that is the first of its kind and the rest is just a ripoff

If you wanna see more of this game your best off looking at some footage
it is of an older version tho (the problem with lack of feedback on the games you make has been fixed in the form of game reports)

This is a good nautral look (as my opinion may be biased as i enjoyed this game a lot and put a lot of hours into it).

It is not a ripoff.

What games do you play? List them and I will tell you what they ripped off from, and once you realize everything that exists today is a ripoff of something else, I will ask what you will do with your life, since you demand everything be 100% original concept. Maybe you will just jump off a bridge but that wouldn't be original either.

Thadian, it's a different concept though. "Game Dev Story" is not a genre. There are genres of games that all do something different, and this one just seems to have gone "Oh, that phone game is neat. US TOO BUT FOR 9 DOLLARS MORE!"

these two, Game Dev Tycoon is awesome, and in some ways it's better than Game Dev Story, and in some cases it's the other way around.

when it comes down to it, it's awesome to have both, so i can play this on PC and Game Dev Story on my iPod...

the devs even stated that Game Dev Story serves as an inspiration [leviathyn.com]

both games are awesome, no denying it (that's if you like the theme or genre)
