How does marketing work?
Do I just purchase one of the things (magazines, magazines+demos, small campaign, or large campaign) once? Or do I need to purchase it multiple times? If so when? Does it benefit to purchase all?

I just don't understand how it works.

Marketing increases the “hype” number. The higher the hype, the higher your initial sales.

So yeah, you may need to buy more marketing to increase the hype before the game goes on sale.

G3 event also helps with this.

Towards the end-game when you can make AAA games, you can set your research team to market the game for you that lasts throughout the entire development of the game.

Right I understand how hype works, was wondering how buying marketing works.

it doesn't seem to do anything when I buy more and more of marketing. Buying more than 1 large campaign for the same game or buying all 4 of the marketing types. I just don't see a difference being made.
You only need to buy one type of marketing per game. Buying more marketing wont increase your hype over the maximum amount. For example, if you buy large marketing, following it up with small marketing wont make any difference to the hype. Likewise if you buy small marketing then follow up with large marketing, you'll only get as much hype as if you'd bought large marketing only, so the money spent on small marketing will be wasted.

It doesn't matter which development stage you choose to advertise your game. Provided that you market *before* the game is completed (the bug ironing out stage) it will always give you the maximum amount of hype for that marketing type.

I find each type of marketing works better with specific game sizes. "Magazines" campaigns can work for small games, but aren't essential to their success. "Magazines and demos" works well with "publishing deal" games. And so forth.
Just keep moving up the list as your games increase in size and complexity, although I wouldn't bother with large campaigns until you've researched multi-platform games.
