Unable to create temporary Directory

This is the error I get when I try to play the game. Whether using the "opt-in Beta" or the stable version I get the error. I have verified the file with the same conclusion. And I have uninstalled the game and reinstalled it to get the same cute blue screen with clouds on it stating the error. If anyone can point me in the right direction on how to solve this issue please help.

EDIT:
One other side question relating to this is:
Why is there no 'exit' button on the error screen, or a timeout that closes the app all together or something that let's me know to press Alt+F4 to close it?
I let it run for over 5 minutes thinking it was trying to do something to resolved the problem itself before I realized I had been caught stearing at the pretty clouds.

This usually happens when the game isn't able to write to the Windows temporary directory. Make sure you have space on your HDD and that no third party app is blocking the game from writing there.

I use Windows 10 OS. The only other applications running are Steam App and Windows Defender. Window's Defender is my anit-everything and in my experience I have found that the software usually doesn't interfear with my steam games. I have played the game before while running the software. To conclude, I have 1.7 tera-bytes of memory left on my hard drive.

To add to my prior comment: I gave the whole Game Dev Tycoon folder, that is located inside steam/steamapps/common folder, an exclusion in my AV software, verified the files and I get the same error.

Sadly, this error message happens before our custom game code even starts, we have no control over it. I'd check where your Windows installation is configured to store temporary files and verify that it's a writeable location.

Disparingly, another ten dollars wasted on a game I can't play because the developers can't solve issues that other developers have no issue with. (EDIT sorry for being way out of line with that comment)I have played the game before. In fact I have over 212 hours recorded on steam. There is nothing different in my machine. (EDIT: <snip>no reason for me to be rude<snip>)

I know this is frustrating and I didn't mean to sound dismissive. Apologies if it came across as such. The reality is that we cannot do much except suggest things and try to get more data. In the past there was always a local reason why this error happens. Some other program is interfering, some setting in Windows is incorrect. Something is blocking the game from extracting files it needs to run. We would love not to have this issue and you are right that other developers don't because they don't use the same technology for their game than we do.

Have you tried running it as an Administrator already?
The other thing that might help is closing down all other non-essential applications. Perhaps there is a seemingly insignificant application that interferes.

Thank you for being patient with me. I do get over reactive at times and try to catch it before it slips out :P.

Again, as I stated before. The only applications that are running are the Steam app (which has to run so I can run steam games) and Window's defender. Essential apps such as sound card, video card, microsoft essentials, and network card are also running. But no other 3rd party applications are running.

I have tried to run the app as an administrator, and made an exception in my AnttiVirus software for the complete Game Dev Tycoon folder.

I have uninstalled the game, reinstalled the game, and verified the files after each step of all my trials.

I do not understand what you mean "check where Windows installation is configured to store temporary files" when I look in the settings where programs store their data, it states C:\Users\USER_NAME\AppData\Local. I have looked in that folder and there is a folder for Game Dev Tycoon with files in it.

The temp files would be in C:\Users\USER_NAME\AppData\Local\Temp, I believe.

Can you post a screenshot of the error? I just want to make sure that I'm not missing something.
Also: Are you subscribed to any mods on the workshop?

No, I am not subscribed to any mods.

The complete folder path is:
C\Users\USER_NAME\AppData\Local\Game Dev Tycoon - Steam

inside that folder are the folders
  • Cache (folder)
    • index (file)
    • the-real-index (file)
  • GPUCache (folder)
    • data_0 (file)
    • data_1(file)

Thanks for that. As I feared, this error is thrown by the underlying executable that starts our game :/ - I'll try to investigate more tomorrow. Perhaps I can find something that we overlooked before.

Thank you Greenheart Games. I will be patiently waiting. In the mean time, I have uninstalled the game, deleted all temporary files, rebooted my computer and currently installing the game.

Btw, all my steam apps that have save data all save to a similar folder as your does/did. There is no Temp file in any of the AppData files at all that I could see.
The Winter Bud Feb 2, 2018 @ 9:19am
Well, my last trial was a success. After
  • uninstalling the game
  • deleting the temp folder \AppData\Local\Game Dev Tycoon - Steam
  • rebooting the system
  • reinstalling the game
I was able to start the game successfully.

I want to thank you again for being patient with me. I don't know what the actual problem was but it seems to be fixed now.

Edit: even after deleting the appdata files the game still had my game saves which I think I was worried second to most. Foremost was playing the game.

I am so glad to read this! Very happy that you can play now even though it leaves me without a single clue why this is happening... The game supports Steam cloud saves so we try to use the latest saves from that if possible. Happy gaming! - Patrick
