Thousands of gems LOST constantly!?
I decided to put this here instead of a bug report because it seams intentional but i don't understand or like it...

best guess is a constant and unavoidable loss of 10-20% gem earning.

The magnet feature for the gems seams to be broken in a way.. while destroying blocks the gems get drawn towards the copter and slow down within range, then most of them get absorbed and sent to the top left but SOOO many of them fall directly down.. when I travel downwards I'm collecting more then when I'm standing still. this wouldn't be a problem EXCEPT if you wait and go down to collect all those gems that fell... they are not there at the bottom of the map, they de-spawn.
I have played the demo to the point that I can 100% clear each map and this has been happening the entire time... the magnet upgrades don't seem to fix the problem at all they just draw in more gems from farther away that then also hit the slowing barrier around the craft and separate the gems between collected and wasted.

This doesn't sound quite right... Can you check for error logs? Easiest way is to click BUG REPORT on the main menu. It should open a folder on your computer with logs (but there may not be any).
No logs have been saved.
i think the gems should be absorbed into the copter and that's it, having them fly from the copter to the top left of the screen is pretty distracting anyway. That would also fix the issue of gems reaching the craft, slowing down, and separating... just my humble opinion.

The animation from the copter to the top left is purely a UI effect - when that happens the gems are already registered as collected.

Your description of what is happening doesn't fully match what I expect. I know it's a lot to ask, but if you could possibly record some footage of the game then that would be amazing.
Visually it appears that when you capture a large amount of gems at once the 'copter can't absorb them all at once. So you see a lot fall straight down. Flying down expecting to see them lying on the ground there is rarely any.
This might be just a visual thing, or maybe the 'copter can only absorb so many gems per second, or they are actually being wasted - hard to say.

The OP is right, magnet enhancement doesn't seem to mitigate this which I feel it's a visual thing but I have not data to support that.

I'll post a screenshot in a few minutes.
Not the greatest examples but I only seem to start seeing this once you get a lot of gun upgrades, like the chaingun + dirt sifter.
This spams a lot of gems, especially with drones too, and many drop straight down.
If they hit something they bounce and you automatically suck them up, if they fall too far off screen they seem to disappear.

Made another change in 0.21 - curious to hear what people think.

Did 3 runs and the issue with gems dropping straight down and disappearing seems to be far less.
I did not get the chance to get a 2x or 3x dirt sifter + chaingun + explosive bullets to really saturate the gems.

I also experienced my first crash about 1/2 way through the 3rd run.
Upgrade screen, clicked on magnet upgrade, screen started to do the rotate thing to close and I was at my desktop without warning.

I've pushed a build to the experimental branch. Please could anyone (but particularly those who experienced the crash) test it out and see how it works! If you see the magnet bolt-on, please grab it.

It should say version 0.22 in the bottom left of the settings menu.

0.22 is now on the main branch as a tester with previous crashes is now no longer able to reproduce.
I've grabbed the magnet upgrade several times prior and now after your update and I was never able to reproduce it.
