Starsector is far more complex and set in space, but I enjoy it for similar reasons as Dust Raiders: active combat, fleet building, sandbox experience with combat, missions and trade.
Ah yes! Sunless Skies. That one is also quite simple, but with a Lovecraftian setting.
Also maybe Starcom: Unknown Space.
I would check them out first on Youtube for some gameplay, so you get an idea if you like them.
I might be wrong of course, and I hope I am.
When creating the game, we were inspired by several titles. I was the person responsible for vehicle animations and to be completely honest - I didn't look at other games while making them. (: I just made them the way that felt good enough. I guess it's pretty hard to animate cars differently, otherwise they'd feel unnatural, right? 😅
We know the ramming system from DRT. But in Dust Raiders vehicles receive damage from the ramming itself, the "wall" doesn't do anything to them. The grid size is the result of many tests - this one just worked and looked best. (:
Remember that Dust Raider is mainly about trading and exploration - think of it more like of Port Royale. There are many ways to avoid combat. ✌️
