Half Sword - Game Play Basics - How to Survive
I cant make a guide so I'm going to post what i wrote here.

Gameplay Basics

This game has a learning curve and I am still on it so that that for what it is.

First thing, get familiar with the controls because they are unorthodox but fun.

  • movement is normal with WASD
  • E is right hand pick up, Q is left hand pick up (this also drops when an item is equipped)
  • you can hold Q or E to sheath one-handed weapons, two-handed weapons will not sheath
  • hold RMB (right hand) and/or LMB (left hand) and move your mouse to do swing attacks on enemies
  • double click RMB and move your mouse to do a thrust attack
  • hold RMB and LMB to grip your one handed weapon with both hands or block with a two handed weapon.
  • Shift to sprint and Ctrl to crouch
  • V does switch between 1st and 3rd person modes, but I would stick to 3rd most of the time as the FOV in 1st person is awful (the FOV slider in the settings menu only affects 3rd person)

    Surviving the first round

  • grab the first weapons/armor you can find
  • if there are no weapons, think again grab a candle stick, especially the larger ones
  • the longer the weapon, the better your chance of survival keep enemies at a distance
  • always be on the move finding more equipment, follow the shimmers in the distance.
  • try to aim your swings and thrusts where the enemy's weapon isn't and swing hard.
  • you can pick up barrel and pot lids to use as shields, however i find little luck with them.

    Ending the first round

you will fight who I call the Scythe Man. He is equipped with a two-handed scythe and has two one-handed scythes sheathed on his side wearing all black armor and a helmet. the key to defeating him is to get him to the ground as quickly as possible and ending him. Avoid hitting his head as he is basically invulnerable there. The key is not getting his because one hit from him is basically a death sentence. once you get him, make sure to take his two-handed scythe as it is very helpful in the round to come.

round two will have better equipped enemies that will often show up two at a time, but there is also better weapons and armor available.

Some points I have to address:

"hold RMB and LMB to grip your one handed weapon with both hands or block with a two handed weapon."

You only need to click RMB once to switch the way you hold a weapon, like a one hand weapon with two hands or hold a 2 handed weapon differently. Holding is also an option but very finicky.

"... FOV in 1st person is awful (the FOV slider in the settings menu only affects 3rd person)"

As a 1st Person FOV player this is simply untrue. 1st Person POV is very good for gauging depth perception as well as to better tell where you want your weapon to hit. Also, the FOV slider DOES affect your 1st Person FOV (Try to Verify Demo files if this isn't the case!)

Other than these gripes I have, this is a pretty well-written guide. Thanks for writing this! (I also give steam award :stimulation:)
