Can you loot armour and weapons from dead enemies?

I keep pressing e on the enemy but it only grabs him and idk how to get the armour, i beat like 4 bosses and im still in underwear

Pretty sure if you an enemy has an helmet and you bash their head enough when they're on the ground so that it explodes fully; you are able to pick up the helmet as a "new" piece of gear..
Other than that no idea
