* Music changes for the "boss" (who is a pushover with some practice)
Always orient yourself as best as you can toward your opponent and aim where you want to hit BEFORE you hold left mouse button (LMB) or (RMB) if holding a one-handed object in the left hand. This is critical to ensuring your weapon is on the correct plane to impact your target before you wind back.
To be effective, you MUST learn the ranges of the weapons you use AND face when:
Swinging: (LMB)
Stabbing: ((LMB)) **you have to hold long enough for the action to complete
Guarding: (RMB) or ((RMB)) **don't have to hold if double-tapped
Holding any attack action directly in front of you
* Note: one-handed weapons and stances lose RMB as a "guard" as RMB controls that ARM
Holding double-click on either ((LMB)) or ((RMB)) is an outstretched arm, weapon, or shield, good for ranging, "fencing" an opponent out, or stuffing a closer range weapon to win the inside and keep them from striking. You CAN brace by holding any other attack action and laying your weapon or hand behind and above your shield or ranging point, but it is unsteady and takes practice.
Holding left mouse-button (LMB) directly in front with a two handed is a vertical guard. This can be shifted CRISPLY left or right to push away a thrust or block a swing. Just make sure to move your body away from their weapon as well.
Speaking of swinging, we swing THROUGH our target, they are but a point on an arc or thrust.
The object is to bring your edge in contact with the opponent before they do you; getting them to run into it still counts and is GOOD swordsmanship.
An example combo for the simple Garden Hoe:
- Two-handed stance
1. Overhead from the left shoulder to right hip driving toward the ground (LMB)
2. Guard and twist right (RMB)
* You are aiming for the head and left shoulder of your target.
* If you miss with your first swing, go ahead and follow up with an overhead from right to left and set back up for 1
* If your staff strikes instead of the head, the second move of the combo half-staffs to guard and drags them in and off their feet, the right twist almost always slits the throat or disarms
* You want to knock them on the ground with the weight and momentum of the hoe to give yourself time to deliver an accurate killing blow
Tips for Pitchfork:
* If shorter range opponent and less heavy weapon, stab ((LMB)) and hold a moment before they enter YOUR range to present the pointy end. with any luck, they will not QUITE be able to sidestep you or present their own weapon without skewering their hand, defanging the snake.
* You are aiming for the hand holding the weapon, the closest hand to you, chest, throat
* If they bypass the tips or use a shield, half-swording (RMB) brings the tips closer to your core, giving you another chance to stab by simply twisting left
Tips for Axes
* Run as fast as you can aim well and strike for the neck from above (LMB), using gravity to help you
* The weight of the weapon allows you to throw caution to the wind as your momentum and weight will deflect most weapons or shields
* Works if you are holding a shield, but the more power and precision, the less likely they can block or survive the blow
Tips for Shields
* Punch their weapon away
* Be careful against hooked weapons
Lastly, practice using the tall candle-stick with both (LMB) and (RMB), it will make early game so much faster and consistent :-)
Good LORD I'm screenshotting this.
If you have the longest weapon, you can play the long game. Tap right click to enter block mode and hold left click to move your weapon as far away from you as possible. Makes getting to you difficult for the enemy. Speaking of, swipe enemy weapons away, then strike their hands, and then their face to kill them. Of course, there's some variation to this, but this mindset works a lot of the time for me. Sometimes I have to cave in a fella's skull several times with the short end of my polearm. So be it.
A lot can be said of running away from bad fights too. Actually running away from most fights gives you more chances to find better armor too.
