How does inventory work? How to put something in it?

Press E or Q with weapon in hand untill you move it to inventory, after you'll be able to take this weapon from inventory

You have to keep E (for your right hand) or Q (For your left hand) pressed, and the character will sheathe the weapon you're holding (Only for one-handed weapons).
You can sheathe multiple weapons at once, and a long press will unsheathe them.

You can also press R to open the inventory, and select the weapon you want to equip.

What everyone else said, and also whether you left or right click in your inventory determines what hand you grab the weapon with, so you can use the inventory to switch hands for a sheathed weapon rather than having to drop it, useful if you have a sheathed weapon on the wrong side with a hand cut off.
