However, the game stutters big-time when it attempts to connect during gameplay. Hopefully someone will make a mod that patches those attempts out of the game as outside of the online functionality, and the initial Denuvo activation, it seems to work fine offline.
I can download the game on my main PC later, and then double check this without an internet connection to confirm.
I might have either disconnected after hitting the main menu, or used my cellphone's tethering feature to keep online on my Steam Deck, but as far as I'm aware, I was able to still technically play it in an area without cellular service. After trying just recently, I can confirm that disconnecting the internet after you reach the main menu allows you to keep playing without much problems (outside of maybe occasional stuttering when it tries to phone home).
Maybe just like with Crash 4, this may be an easy workaround with a mod while still keeping Denuvo in place (for activating the game obviously). Hopefully with this Steam release, there will be a proper modding community for it.
The internet connectivity thing is something that Activision could fix easily if they're interested. I'm hoping personally that they added some SteamInput hooks to check the current controller type because on EGS, I have to spoof my DualSense as a DualShock 4 to have the right button prompts.
Either wait for a Steam sale and/or wait for Steam reviewers to (hopefully and deservedly) pan this in the user reviews and to give Activision pushback on social media. You also have the option of the Switch version (with a legally acquired dump of it) running in a certain piece of software that's a citrus fruit.
If you have a desktop, it's less of an issue unless online servers shut down or Valve blocks support for your operating system (Which in that case, you might be better off running Linux and playing games through Proton than something old and insecure like Windows 7).
There is literally nothing here in this game that validates the use of always online DRM. The console versions can be played completely online. You can em*late the Switch version without an internet connection.
Next you're gonna defend the current GPU pricing situation, I bet. Steam forum users have gotta stop it with the braindead gotchas rather than looking at the bigger picture. This is how the slippery slope works. Congrats, every major AAA game launch is now a Diablo 3 disaster and it's been normalized.
Anyone supporting or hand waiving this needs to learn some self respect.
