No obvious place to review controls for new progression abilities?

I finished Sculptor's Peak and then put the game aside for a while. By the time I came back, I only vaguely remembered getting something at the end, which I thought might have been a boomerang but I wasn't sure. But I could find nothing that told me how to use it.

Eventually I figured it out (hold the attack button for a while), but it really seems like there should be someplace in the menu where I can check these things.

It doesn't help matters that the game has a separate thing called "upgrades" which are totally different, making it harder to do any sort of websearch for these things. Especially when I wasn't entirely sure what I'd gotten.
