I got the broomerang a little while ago and have reached the theater. I found one of the film reels, and I could swear I'd seen another of those doors but can't find it. I wish the minimap showed things besides terrain a little better. There are several places where on the map it looks like I can go that way, but there's actually an obstacle preventing me from passing.

Not sure the films reels are what I'm supposed to be doing now or if it's a side thing, but I'd love some direction.

Think I've got it, northwest of the cat spirit shrine is an entrance to Neon Crest that you need the broomerang to open.

The map shows lock icons for reel doors.

I thought so too, I was pretty sure I had seen an icon for the first one. Based on experimentation with other doors, the map doesn't seem to show locks unless you have gotten very close to them, so I suspect I didn't get close enough.

One thing that really helped me was opening the map and changing it's mode as it shows you which paths you haven't taken yet.
The film reels are indeed a sort of side-quest, but still one you need to do if you want to reach the final boss.
The path to the next major upgrade is found to the south and then west of the pearl's shrine teleport point that leads to the film theater. Follow that path out of the temple and keep heading west and then up into a new area.
