You can purchase PC-compatible gaming controllers at many retail locations in your area, or through your online retailer of choice. This will make it much easier for you to play games in your Steam library that are designed to be played with a controller.
I know it can be a confusing issue for a first-time user. But try not to get discouraged. I myself used my PC as a footrest for six whole months before a friend recommended that I buy a monitor for it. Boy, was there egg on my face that day!
Anyway, I hope I was able to help clarify your problem. Best of luck finding a controller! I'm sure in time, you'll learn to take advantage of the myriad features that Steam has to offer.
