Also the spike shoes don't work on Venus Traps, those big red flower mouths in the jungle. A lot of us probably learned that lesson the hard way, I know I did. I think they did work on them in the original free version...
Teleporters are indeed a serious danger if you pick them up unprepared, but they can be really useful when navigating levels, letting you reach some places without using bombs. They are also favored by speedrunners because they let you reach the bottom in the fastest way possible. They can also be used to 'telefrag' most enemies, if you're lucky enough to teleport onto them.
To successfully use the teleporter you need to know exactly how it works down to the numbers. If you plan to use it, read about it on the Spelunky wiki first: http://spelunky.wikia.com/wiki/Teleporter
