This is random but I've been trying to figure out this same issue for ages and what I found is to just leave an active Chrome tab open in the background (hardware acceleration in Chrome needs to be enabled) when you play and it removes the "cap".

I wish I could narrow it down if this is a Windows 10 or an NVIDIA drivers related bug because this 50fps lock happens in some other older games too (Orcs must die 2).

Do you have NVIDIA card(which?) and Windows 10?

The game simply isn't taking advantage full of your Graphics card... and the fix is to leave something open in the background to "wake up" the GPU.

I have nvidia gtx 960m and win 10 and none of these fixed worked for me, I also think that game like this should run smoothly even on toaster, so I simply gave up with this game until devs do something wih it. (I know they probably wont)
