Choppy/laggy gameplay in The City.
All the main mission/side job locations run very well (60fps on near max), but the City areas are very choppy frameratewise, dipping to 1-2fps every 5 seconds or so. It almost feels like prefetching (reminiscent of Stalker CoP gameplay), and completely ruins the flow of traveling around the City. I've tried downgrading versions but no change. Anyone else getting this, or found a fix?

Windows 7 32bit
GTX650Ti Boost
4GB RAM
i5-3350P @3.1GHz

I am having the same problem. My FPS is fine in the city (50-60+ consistently) But every few seconds the game just stutters and it seems to happen a lot while I am turning around doing a 180 or something usually does it. Its like the game is saying "oops.. sorry I forgot to load that part of the city, hold on a second please! Ah there we go.. until you turn around again!"

Apart from the hex editing because I am not concerned with the shroud/flash right now. I just want the damn game to run properly!
However, Antinox, you should also try those things to see if it helps.

Hmmm these look pretty promising. I've also seen a lot of talk about the 32bit launcher fixing the problems, but being on 32bit anyway, this clearly isn't the case for me.
I'll try out some of the fixes on the list and report back.

Good luck mate, hopefully it works for you. But if it doesn't maybe we can figure out what the problem is. I know my card is not great but I get no difference between full ultra and low / everything off. It still stuffers/freezes for a split second every few secs. And my FPS is around 40-45 on FULL everything too so I really don't think its my card. Maybe 1gb VRAM is too low for this game.. but I doubt it. How much dedicated vram do you have?

1 GB of VRAM is definitely too low to run on Ultra textures.

However, you said you tried running with low settings, so that's odd. What resolution do you play at?

Have you tried lowering the resolution to the minimum the game will run at and seen how it performs? Just to see if it also loads like that at that res.

I have the same issue on an overclocked i5 3570k and a 2GB 6970. Great frames anywhere but the hub world. The hub world pulls me down into single digits, and is completely unplayable.

Well I couldn't fix this outright, but it seems better since I limited the texture memory pool size in accordance to my cards 1gb.

Note: Make sure you follow the last step where he says its optional, I didn't add that launch option and it didn't make any difference, so I added it and it worked.

Also follow the rest of his suggestions. 32bit seems to work for a lot of people. Not for me though..

Modifying Texture Memory Pool Size:

This a tweak that usually improves framerate smoothness with all Unreal Engine 3 games. You need to change the "PoolSize" value in the game's engine.ini file to [your GPU's VRAM amount in GB] x 600. This translates to the following values:

1 GB => PoolSize = 600
2 GB => PoolSize = 1200
3 GB => PoolSize = 1800

... and so on!

1. Navigate to your ...\ThiefGame\Config folder
2. Backup your ThiefEngine.ini file
3. Open the ThiefEngine.ini file with a text editor
4. Change

"PoolSize=0"

to

"PoolSize=[the value appropriate for your GPU, calculated as shown above!]"

5. Save the file and set it to "read-only".

6. Go to your Steam library, right-click on Thief > Properties > Set Launch Options > Type in "-ReadTexturePoolFromIni" > OK (apparently this step is optional; thank you for reporting back, CiroConstantino!).

That's it, you're good to go!
