Thief - The Square Enix service is not available - SOLVED
Everytime I start Thief, I get the "The Square Enix service is not available" message. I have never been able to get a connection since purchasing Thief from Steam.

When I have my firewall disabled I still get this error.

How do I debug this situation? What Server/IP is Thief trying to access? Is there a port I need to open and forward on my router?

Thanks

Square Enix finally responded to my support request on this problem. They blamed the Steam Client.

Steam support said that it is most likely a network problem, which makes sense, BUT SE will not provide me with the URL or IP address or Port of the Server that Thief is trying to access. Without that information, it is impossible to debug. It may be a problem with my ISP, but they cannot do any checking, because they don't know the IP Address/port to check.

Steam Client and Thief have been reinstalled twice and the problem persists. It appears to be a Network problem, either with my PC or ISP, but with no network info from SE nothing can be checked.

Does anyone have any more info that could assist with this?

Thanks

That's funny, because it looks like the problem is with Thief's server: https://t4.os.eidos.com

As an aside, the theif client itself sends 2.5KB up and receives 9.1KB down every time I attempt to connect. So, it's connecting to *something* for a brief moment.

and now that their server is responding, it is working. funny that, eh?

I have no problem pinging this address and can open it in a browser, but still Thief fails to connect to SE for Leaderboards. Perhaps my version of Thief uses a different address.

Both Steam and SE support have been worthless. Both blaming each other and not providing any information that could helo with a diagnosis.

Googling has not helped except to highlight the many problems with Square Enix as a company.
Problem solved with no useful help from Steam or Square Enix Support despite my testing indicating it was a network issue.

I have Internet Explorer set to use a proxy sever. Once I disabled that proxy, the Square Enix connection was made. I rarely use IE. I was not expecting that Thief would be using IE network settings.

I had the same problem. It used to work, but stopped working. For me the cause was that I upgraded Comodo Firewall to the latest version, and for some reason it decided to auto-sandbox Thief. Maybe I clicked the wrong answer at some time, I don't know.
A disabled the Autosandbox feature, and the problem was solved.
So a general suggestion is to take a look at your security softwares, try to disable certain features (not only the firewall, because that did not solve for me.) Try to add the game to the whitelist.
Now I know that I am still in the Top 100 of the custom leaderboards. Come on , guys and girls, 870 points can't be that hard to beat!

anybody got a solution ??
Okay so I had this issue and went into the game settings and switched it to launch in 32 bit and changed the resolution to match my monitor and it somehow made it go away? Not sure if this was a fluke or not but I own a 34" curved monitor and most of the time especially with pre 2016 games if there's something wrong with my game changing the resolution or switching to 32 bit launch fixes it entirely. Good luck!
