I'm in the Ancient ruins right now and at a certain point Garrett is at the top of a wrecked spiral staircase with two ropes hanging down to about mid-way. When you look down into the hole he says the above quote, but all I hear is a bestial cry, I don't see anything anywhere. Where should I be looking?

I remember that place. I didn't see anything when he said that, but figured it was just bad video quality or something. But if actual players can't see it either, does that mean it in fact isn't there, and this is just another unfinished part of the game?

Actually, now that I think about it, I'm guessing Garrett may have been referring to the sound of the bestial screech, not to anything you might see. A little further on, when you finish the moving staircase puzzle, you catch a glimpse of something humanoid and Garrett says, "What was that?!"
