Launching theif sends me directly to a black screen....
Someone please help? It's completely black, nothing on the screen.

I am having the same problem. I did the "Verify Steam Cache" and that didn't work either. I can launch the game and get the Thief menu but once I hit play it just sits on a black screen with no sound.

Edit: Well after letting the black screen sit for 10 mins while looking through posts for a way to resolve the issue it started up. That's an excessively long loading screen >_>

Check the options and uncheck 'mantle'. My card supports mantle but game sends me to black screen too. Without it, it runs.

I've checked this again. Mantle is indeed the problem but it works if you set DoF to high. Very strange problem.

Verifying steam cache doesn't work, I'm going to try the rest of your solutions, I'll tell you if it works, thanks!!!

I just tried to reboot it and it took the full 10 mins again... Try and wait to see if that helps. Once it starts up it runs smoothly.

next thing is try to run it in windows 7 compatibility mode.... appears to fix it for those useing windows 8

file is found here. ps. note this is for a windows 64 bit system.. if you got a windows 32 bit systemthen go to that folder Win32

C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\SteamApps\common\Thief\Binaries2\Win64

right click shipping-thief game file... go down to properties and click it.

in compatibility tab check box to use compatibility mode then choose windows 7

Yes, would like to add that Miggi3 is correct, it takes 10 full minutes to launch up. Still, game runs very smoothly and nice once the time is done. Thanks guys!!!
