Thief and Windows XP
Hi All

My mum purchased Thief for her XP computer, but it dosnt work. Does this mean that Thief is not compatible with Windows XP. If so then I heard about a XP mod that someone was suppose to be doing. Is this mod out.

System Requirements

Minimum:
OS: Windows Vista with Platform Update for Windows Vista
Processor: High-Performance Dual Core CPU or Quad Core CPU
Memory: 4 GB RAM
Graphics: AMD Radeon 4800 series / Nvidia GTS 250
DirectX: Version 10
Hard Drive: 20 GB available space

Recommended:
OS: Windows 7, Windows 8
Processor: AMD FX 8000 series or better / Intel Quad i7 Core CPU
Memory: 4 GB RAM
Graphics: AMD Radeon HD R9 series or better / Nvdia GTX 660 series or better
DirectX: Version 11
Hard Drive: 20 GB available space

A couple problems with the XP system...As you see, Thief is designed to work on Vista, 7 or 8. The other thing is that her XP computer is probably running on a P4 (single core) CPU with a less than sufficient GPU. So, even if Thief were to run on it, it would likely be so slow and laggy, she wouldn't enjoy the game.

As for an XP mod, I don't know of one that will solve her problem but, again, if it did, the game would run poorly.

Hi All

Thanks cyberwiz97. Thats a shame. I know XP computers are considered old and inferior now compared to the other OS, but you would think they could do it for people that own XP, who dont want to have to buy a new computer with Vista/7 or 8 or even upgrade. My mum has played every other Thief instalment, except this and enjoyed them all.

I agree. It's sad but, unfortunately, that's just gaming evolution. With XP being officially at it's end of life, meaning Microsoft no longer supports it, no one will be developing games or software for it any longer. XP is over 12 years old and, while it worked fine for me for most software I used, it wasn't quite cutting it for newer games. And, that will only be more the case in the future. I sympathize with your mum but, it might be time to upgrade.

Yeah, and this Thief places heavy demand on the graphics card. It has lots of particle and lighting effects that make the card work hard. It's a worthy game for sure (enjoyable, but falls just short of 'great'). Though there's a nice scare chapter to compete with the Shalebridge Cradle from Thief Deadly Shadows... Maybe if she is able to upgrade at some point, this could be the game to baptise her new PC. :)

The need to upgrade might become greater now that the new consoles are out. For the longest time even old computers were better than a gaming console, so most games ported over pretty effortlessly. Now each console has 8 cores and around 5GB VRAM apiece, game requirements are likely to go up.

You know that the other Thief games are 15 years old, right ?

XP computers are not considered old and inferior... they ARE old and inferior. Install Windows Vista, 7 or 8 on your mom's PC, the result will be the same: she will not meet the minimum system requeriments.

The game needs DirectX10 or DirectX11 to run, Windows XP does not get DX10 or 11, it only gets DX9. That is also one of the biggest reasons why Windows XP is not supported. And even then, chances are your moms computer probably doesn't even meet the other minimum requirements anyways.

Hi All

Thanks for all the comments. My Mum says that when she has swelled the coffers a bit she may consider upgrading. On the other hand my Bro, and I, as a nice surprise will buy her a new PC for Christmas. (all being well).

Oh, that's awesome! Good luck - that'll be a fabulous surprise for her. There's a good chance that Thief will be in Steam's Christmas sales too, so that could be the cherry on top!

you cant upgrade that pc...the motherboard probably only supports 2gbs of ram...besides the graphic card probably only has 512mbs of vram, and a single or a duocore...if its a true xp pc...totally need a new one to game today, especially thief 2014.
