It's sad.

Given the current cost of development it’s financial suicide to make an AAA stealth game. Plus this game killed any chance for the series.
Forget it.
What little chance the game had has been destroyed by the developers shortsightedness and majority of fans haven't given it a shot because of the mechanics and writing antithetical to the original titles.
Let me also quote a post from an old Thief forum back when this one was announced where people were speculating what the new one will have and among all the funny suggestions someone had the last word with this one.
"New Thief will be so bad it will make Deadly Shadows look good."
Funny thing is I actually liked Deadly Shadows. Taff it.
After finishing it I wanted more, but after Thief 2014 this is a good closure for the story.
Styx has another game coming soon

So, 2014, 2017 and then 2025 for Styx
Meanwhile Thief, nothing since 2014, but Hitman managed to pull off 3 games as well from 2016-2022
Now MGS is getting remakes/remasters of its old games, seems like stealth isn't completely dead as a genre.
Square doesn't own Thief, they sold the IP (and Deux Ex)(and their related studios) to Embracer three years ago in 2022. Embracer can pass it on to any of their subsidiary studios that they own (THQ, Gearbox, Eidos, etc.)
IOI has a James Bond stealth/action game in development. So again, the genre isn't dead.
The current problem for Thief isn't Square anymore, it's that Embracer spread themselves too thin and one of their investors backed out of a 2 billion dollar deal so they are currently restructuring. It's anyones guess where their IP's will end up or what they will focus on next; but they claim to have at least 70 games in development (though a good chunk of them are mobile)
Hitman I'd argue isn't really pure stealth, its more of a murder sandbox/social stealth. Even then like metal gear its way more popular then thief as an IP.
There have been other indie stealth games intravenous and 2, blood west etc but again not that popular(sold well enough for either dlc or a sequel). James Bond is still more popular do to its brand but its more action with stealth elements but most of the IO team isn't there anymore and not much news on the james bond game. Stealth like im sims will always be a genre that never sells while outside of a few IP's.
I have always loved Deadly Shadows, regardless of some fans disliking the changes it made.
That said, this is not "Thief 4" but a total reimagining of the original, almost a prequel since he isn't dealing with the Keepers in this one but we hear whispering about the Trickster and experiments in electricity. The game makes quite a few references to the OT.
It took me a few years to come to terms with the changes this game made to the original but when I came back to it, a few years after my first attempts, I found myself more open to the different approaches and found myself coming to like it.
This will never be the cult classic that the originals are but it was a solid game despite that. You can feel Garrett grow as a character throughout the game and by the end he starts feeling like the old, sardonic Garrett that we knew and loved.
I think a sequel to this could succeed very well, in the current climate, but they came out and stated that they had no intent of ever making a sequel because this one was received so poorly.
I haven't heard anything back.
We'll see.......
