Help? Please? Central Tower Stairs Wheel will NOT turn!

I googled and checked all the forums and walkthroughs about this, and I am apparently the only person who has this issue. I am in the library towers underground ruins, have had no problem finding the central tower stairs and the wheel to move them. My problem is the blasted wheel will not turn. I hit "E" to use it, the little mouse diagram comes up with the little arrows saying "turn", but when I try to turn the wheel, the stairs just rumble and shake but they don't move, it's like they're jammed. None of the walkthroughs say anything about having to UNjam the wheel first, and the YouTube video I saw about it just goes up to the wheel, hits E and it turns like it's supposed to.

The only thing I can think of that might be causing the problem is I'm playing with a wireless trackball not an actual MOUSE, but it hasn't caused any issues in the game up to this point, and it doesn't matter which way I roll the trackball, the wheel refuses to turn.

[Edit: Just plugged in a standard optical mouse, same issues, clearly I'm misunderstanding what I need to turn the wheel. At the risk of sounding really REALLY blonde, exactly HOW is the mouse supposed to be moved to make the wheel turn?]

Any thoughts? Please? I'm really enjoying this game, and hate that something as simple as not being able to turn a wheel is stopping me in my tracks.

[Edit again: FINALLY got it to work, required using the optical mouse and after yanking the mouse around in some semblance of a circular movement for about 5 minutes, finally got the stairs to move enough that when I right clicked to get out, they fell into place. Serious SERIOUS glitch. Leaving this in the thread in case it can possibly help someone else.]

hey sometimes when things get stuck you can do a save then load the save you just made and it will work it helps with guards out of sink and other mis things.and ect.

i had the same problem because i didn't know how to work the track ball. Place your finger on the ball part of your mouse and just easy roll it in a circle until you get the right move or If you have a regular mouse use that, it's easier.

turn the mouse in circles it will do the trick...wasted 15 mins on it.

I just bought this game but figured out how to use a regular mouse for this after about 2 hours . Picture a clock face on your desktop and move the mouse in a clockwise or counterclockwise direction. Works great with no trouble.
