Glad I paid £8.97 from Greenman Gaming and that was for the Master Thief Edition :)
sweet...should have got ab 680...quiter and runs like a champ
The down side I found were: The villians are painfully obvious that they are evil and it wasn't a surprise as to who it was (this mostly applies to Karras vs Constantine), the ending missions for Thief 1 and 2 are weak, the plots were somewhat lacking and the majority of Thief 2's missions were rather dull and I just ran through them as fast as I could to get them over with.
Also I always got this impression that Garrett acting more like a private investigator vs a Thief in Thief 2 and even in Thief 3 he showed some of this. Yes he stole on the side but it felt more like a side thing.
If we want to compare another character from this entry to the originals it would be Erin. She's pretty much the female version of Garrett from Thief 1. He doesn't listen to warnings, he's naive, thinks he's the best and better then other thieves (which is why he takes on so many stupid dangerous jobs), and only after a major event does he learn humility. *SHRUG*
Thief Gold's Thieves Guild can go fall off a cliff for all I care. Worst mission in that game. It's not fun, it's not interesting and it is badly designed. Unless you have a photographic memory and know where everything is, to a newcomer it is a nightmare.
Thief 3 is pretty much the only one of the original three that I would consider to be well balanced (pun not intended) . True, some of the mechnicals were clunky and early but at least they TRIED to do something different. Also the Last mission (the Museum) was the best last mission in that trilogy. Gamall (while still not really all that interesting) still was something I wasn't totally expecting. I mean you knew the Translator was creepy but expecting her to be a super old keeper that went insane? Yeah.
I enjoyed this game alot (I am on my third playthrough with different custom changes made) and I can repect it for what it is: A good effort for a franchise that has been "dead" for 10 years. The city design is similar to Thief 1 where it is cramped and dirty and I like how it focuses more on the everyday citizen of the city vs a faction. That actually is something that bothers me about Thief 2...the City is too clean looking. Like if Karras made street cleaners as well...it doesn't feel like it has that corrupt feeling to it.
It is true that the game is set well into the future and they reused the name Garrett but I didn't find this to be so bothersome unlike some other players. I found this game to be more storyline driven whereas the others were really there to show off your thieving prowess.
I think this game also shows some of the design issues of the other games such as being able to ghost every mission without having to break the storyline (RTC for example) as well as lockpicking (which is time-consumingly horrendous).
I just wish they would fix the storyline and not make each chapter so linear although I did like the escape sequences as well as the part where you have to go to the prison from the mansion. Those parts broke up the gameplay quite nicely and introduced a different aspect of Thief which was not present in the other games.
so naturally when i heard about thief 4 i practically wet myself. i was so excited, just being near me was enough to make you nauseous. When i got it, i rushed home, put it in and by the end of the day, i wanted to murder someone. seriously ♥♥♥♥ this game.
Just started this new thief game, but for now after chapter two this is my second favourite game in thief series. All i had to do was to disable all console-style handholding (remove hud, item highlighting and so on). Add master custom difficulty (slow movement!) and what you got is hardcore thief game.
I don't even mind smaller levels, as they are much more detailed than in older games (big emply maps were so 90s). And when you search for loot you have to really pay attention to every little detail around you, and it would become a real chore if levels were as big as back then.
It's a big surprise fo me, because after all the reviews I thought this new thief game would be even worse than third.
Ive said this before, but Thief 2014 is basically the game Thief Deadly Shadows tried to be. It is like a bigger, better designed, deeper and more challenging and also much less clunkier Thief 3. Thief 2014 continued with and builded upon everything that Thief 3 did right, and fixed what it did wrong.
The Thief series has always been one of the ultimate choices in stealth games.
I love stealth games and Thief is clearly one of the most definitive of the genre. (I own 75% of the games on sale and the rest are mostly on my wishlist or Assassin's Creed which I never got into since the DRM fuelled boycott back in the day)
So Thief 4 specifically? As a fan of the original games (akhv, your opening paragraph is precisely my thoughts!) Thief 4 did disappoint a bit. It just didn't feel to me like it should carry the Thief name but, sticking with it, I did rather enjoy it. It's still a great stealth game and its reviews being so hit or miss are mostly about fans of the originals being disappointed or not.
Sadly, genres like this need to evolve as many of today's gamers don't like the pace and limited abilities that used to be expected of a Thief game. I backed both the Indiegogo and Kickstarter projects for Death To Spies 3 and clearly, hardcore stealth is not a big seller! Splinter Cell also had to make this move to not quite so hardcore and I think Conviction too showed me that while you're disappointed to not have what you wanted, it's still a good stealth game that if it didn't carry the name and its expectations, you'd just get on and enjoy.
If you're not comparing to the orginals, I don't think there's much to be disappointed about with Thief 4 and I assume any of the early fans already bought it so I guess if you're reading this, you should go ahead and buy it!
If you are a fan of the originals, there will likely be some sense of disappointment but even if you have to rename the shortcut to pretend it's not called Thief, you'll probably still enjoy it so still, go and buy it!
I didn't expect classic thief gameplay because I just finished another recent square enix reboot, Tomb Raider. It was a very good game and it was really fun actually, but it completely threw out the window everything that series was about. If Thief reboot was done this way, it would be a CoD-style shooter with a bow.
And we got "no civilian knockouts" instead. That's even more hardcore than any thief game before.
