Thief

So... who is Erin?
I finished the game and since the end of chapter 4 I thought Erin was Garrett's sister. She says: "Is that why you let me go, Garrett? Because I was the only family you had? We never did see eye-to-eye. Big brother always knows best." Now I know there is some Dark Horse comics that apparently gives some more info about their past, but since Steam won't let me upgrade to Master Thief edition I went to Thief wiki to read up on Erin.
Originally posted by Thief wiki:
Erin came to the city as an 8-year-old orphan stowed aboard a ship from shores unknown. She stole on the streets to get by until she was taken in by an affluent brothel and opium den, the House of Blossoms. Here she worked as a 'petal', sweeping floors and carrying the pipes of the rich and famous.

When Erin came of age she was expected to join the ranks of the prostitutes in the establishment but she killed her first unfortunate client and fled to the city streets. This aggressive, reactive way of dealing with her problems has continued into her later years and remains a signature of her personality still.

Garrett discovered her on the streets shortly after and began training her as a master thief but Erin continued to kill. In opposition to Garrett's way of thinking this put obvious pressure on the relationship leading to an ugly split.
...Well I guess that makes sense? But what's with the "I was the only family you had" and "big brother"? I get it that you can call someone "brother" when you're close but are not related by blood, but talking about family? Am I really the only person that got completely wooshed by their whole relationship?
I only cared about her cause I thought she was my sister and it was aww, but turns out she's just some random assassin that doesn't even follow the creed and the world is better off without her.
And now all her drawings of Garrett seem creepy and fangirlish.

But seriously.

Woosh.

I was lucky to watch this https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k5WJmGtHeoU before the game was out, and had rather good understanding of their relationships. Shame the game doesn't tell us it's plot, and we have to read wiki and watch youtube to understand it.
Fangirlish drawings for me were an explanation why she behaves so annoyingly with Garrett - she is hiding her admiration and draws his attention simultaneously, and I think she likes to watch him fighting his anger. I really like Erin, and pity for her, and I wanted to save her till the end. Maybe I'm only one who likes her.

Thanks for the video, I only watched the Uprising trailer before playing so I didn't know anything about this game. It looks like they changed the plot for this game so many times they didn't know what they're doing and had to explain it outside of the game, lame.
Well, I have mixed feelings about Erin. I was digging the whole "save your sister" thing but now it turns out she's not his sister and I'm like wat. But I'd still want to save her I guess cause that "Garrett, I'm slipping!" was repeated so many times I started to feel sad and guilty, lol. But now that I know she's not his sister I'd be afraid she comes back in Thief 5 and we'd get some cheap romance story, oh the horror.

I wish he just killed her in the beginning for being such a...insert word here..., stole her stick of truth, and moved on.

OH NO! No no no, it would be so wrong! Yes, and cheap. Completely out of character, and it seems they realise it too - I heard Garrett said something about a cage when intruded into some girl's house. I got an impression that the new Garrett is even more secluded and distrustful than the old Garrett, and I like it.
About Erin in Thief 5 - I'm almost sure she will be there, why else they would have let her live? I kinda wish she was there, but not as Garrett's girlfriend, or (even worse) the main antagonist. You know, as if she was a part of a story, but not the main part. Also would be cool if we could choose to play as Garrett OR as Erin in the next game; it's not true to the originals I know, but why not, if it's optional.

My god that would be awful as hell.

I kinda felt that her role anyway was a bit too "big" in this game. I mean, it in the end wasn't that major without the primal problem, but it easily gave the impression that the story was pretty much all about Erin's trust issues and Garrett's attempt to chase after and save her. I personally think that they "focused" a bit too much on going through Erin's all kinds of issues compared to all other characters, even to Garret himself.

I don't really mind Erin, but her personality and trippy mushroom haunting throughout the game annoyed me a bit.

how about she was his protégée. He feels responsible. Like the keepers took Garrett in. Big brother feelings. I get that.

The comic helps to understand Erin a bit better. Also the Thief Companion App.

I hope they'll make a DLC about what happened with Erin after the ending because honestly I can't see her in Thief 5 other than looking for her AGAIN, if Garrett was to work with her it'd be out of character for him, if she was to change and stop being a murderous annoyance it'd be out of character for her. But I'm not a writer so maybe they'll come up with some good ideas.

Out of character for Garrett to work with her - yes, absolutely. Out of character for her to change and stop being a murderous annoyance - probably no. She spent a year with Primial within, being used by Orion, and gods know what she had to endure in the Asylum. Things like these well might have changed her personality. Would be odd if after all this she doesn't change a bit.

I was thinking about what might be in Thief 5 with Erin, other than looking for her (boring) or romance (...horrible disappointment). Valiento said, that the comic tells more about her, I haven't read it yet, maybe there are some hints. BUT yesterday I replayed a part in Erin's Mill, where you find a Keeper's medallion, and listened to what she says, and what she told was very inspiring. She said that this thing is a key from her past, from the time before she left home, from before she became Erin.

It means she didn't steal the medallion (as I previously thought), she acquired it legally, maybe by inheritance. It means she has connections with the Keepers (and maybe they still exist!!! oh how I wish they exist!), and probably she is a descendant of the real Garrett (so your assumption that she is new Garrett's sister is close to the truth, she might be not a sister, just some relative). Through Erin we can get back Keepers in Thief 5! I have no words to express all the excitement! The plot of Thief 4 is difficult to comprehend, but this this particular bit gives so much hope!

I thought about that but I'd think she'd cope with it by being back to her normal self, I really can't imagine her changing.

Man, I have to go play the original games and see what those Keepers are all about, from intro to TDP they just sound like Jedi with their "no emotions" crap :P

Thanks for that video. At first I thought it was that little girl he found at the end of Deadly Shadows.

Well, if you played Deadly shadow Erin is the girl he supports after Deadly shadows.
There were a lot of rumors long before Thief 4 that Eidos would let Garrett let left and change the story just playing her instead of garrett. I know there were many whom were pretty scared, me too. A Thief without Garrett is no Thief game. But im not through the hole game, so i dont know much about the relation in Thief 4 in this game. Just seen her disapear and now im in chapter 3 and cant end this chapter dont know why. Bug?

Didn't know that. Good that the devs changed their mind. A new Garrett is better than no Garrett at all.

We'll see, in the final scene she looked and sounded back to normal anyway. At the same time what she said in the mill - "before I became Erin" - suggests that she had already changed once. Maybe I'm overthinking stuff...

IIRC she said "before I left home, before I became Erin", she got to the City when she was 8, and well, that's not really changing, that's growing up. I'd really like if that Keeper medallion would mean she's somehow related to them, but knowing AAA games she just said that to sound mysterious and the devs really didn't put much thought in it and it doesn't mean anything :|

I'm slowly getting there, one mission in TDP a day, lol.
