Press X to jump =/= jump, jump means you press a button you jump, like - you just jump, that's it. No mini-cutscenes involved and floating messages prompting you...
Anyway, it should be evident i am not talking about the button itself... I am talking about freedom of moment, this was paramount in any thief game. If you played you will know why i am surprised...

According to the level designer:
“Jumping, bouncing up and down, kind of broke the immersion … We didn’t want you to be the master thief and you just tend to fall off stuff all the time.”
