Knocking out people though on the otherhand is generally acceptable. You have a hand-club (Blackjack) and chokeholds for that.
Well like Darth listed , those were bad things that can happen , BUT these are not story related.
Im wondering if doing this will affect the game outcome is some way.
Well I'm guessing the most likely thing would be more guards and enemies around in the Hub areas. But yeah in general killing in thief titles is less about story consequence and more about gameplay conquences as result of the decision to kill vs nonlethal. I hope they push things farther. For example, remeber how the 1st time you got caught by guards in Deadly Shadows, there was a chance they'd throw you in prison, and then you had to escape. What if the chances of guards killing you or throwing in prison was based on how much you killed?
Basically as stated its not the moral issue, its the tactical/professionalism issue. Garrett has a reputation to uphold.
At high difficulty settings you can only knock out guards. The Master difficulty forces a rule where any civilians killed or knocked out will end the mission.
It is generally even harder, and more "professional" to complete the game or a mission with no kills or knockouts, and even not to be seen at all or even alert any guards. It is much harder to do and presents a greater challenge. This is called "Ghosting". You can customise the Master difficulty even further to allow no kills or knockouts AT ALL or the mission ends.
If your on "normal" difficulty (named Thief) you can kill whoever you want, but you can also customise this difficulty setting as well. Whether or not killing brings you more trouble than it is worth is for you to decide.
There are no repurcussions to doing so, such as more guards spawning, or loot penalties etc
In fact some Steam achievements and in game goals reward you for doing so. This encourages you to replay missions using different play styles at different difficulties to get these rewards.
