It's strange logically that you would give Metro credit for being an immersive experience for you even though it contains supernatural elements, yet cast doubt on Thief for the possibility that it would contain such elements. It would seem to me that what logically follows from your Metro example is that it depends on how the supernatural elements contributes to the gameplay experience, but it's just my humble opinion. Anyways, we shall see how the sureal aspects of the game plays out, for I'm fairly certain there will be some.
as another example, crysis is one of my favorite games ever, but the last third (or so) of that game, when everything went completely bonkers, isn't held in very high regard by much anyone & certainly not me. you're rolling w/ the the what seems like an established premise, & then all of a sudden...its a different game, essentially, & quite a different world as well. this took me right out of the game; in fa ct, despite regarding crysis as one of my favorite games ever, im not even sure ive yet bothered to finish it. (otoh i would argue warhead did the transition pretty fantastically)
I see. Judging from what you said about Crysis, they didn't do a very good job of building the game up to the point where all hell breaks loose and it feels like too sudden a shift, and you are worried Thief would be the same. I can somehow relate to that but I would not put Crysis in my crosshair. For me the game did an excellent job in that regard, but it's a matter personal taste.
Take it easy. In the past Thief games, the supernatural aspect of the series was never forced on the player. Usually, the game would make it clear that sometimes, a certain area like a mine for example is reputed to be haunted. That's where you'll meet the undead.
Its not, "OH NO!!! Zombies are rising from the ground, time to flee!!!" and that sort of thing. Seriously. So, don't get turned off yet.
1st level - Humans
Next level and levels past that point: Zombies, Zombies, Fireball throwing mages, Burning zombi-dudes, dinosaurs, alien-like creatures, even more zombies, dinosaurs, a couple of more strange creatures.
Thief has always been very big when it comes to supernatural stuff. The shalebridge cradle of thief 3 was so awesome. Go check it out on youtube.
How can anyone who has played a single thief game say, that the supernatural aspect was not forced on the player. Like 30% of each thief game consists of supernatural stuff and that is quite a big part, of what the story is about. It is about magic, about runes, about artifacts, that give power. The Thief universe is riddled with creatures and magic of many kinds.
And that zombie rising thing is actually EXACTLY how it was.
And now quit taffin 'round.
