Thief
Why did people dislike this reboot game of the thief series?
I played through this game a very long time ago back when this game was new on my ps4. I played through the game once and I thought it was fine, but apparently fans disliked this game for some reason why? This 2014 game was my first thief game and I tried very little of the very first thief game in the series. From what I remembered in this 2014 game it has a light and dark mechanic which I think was similar to the first game where enemies literally can't see you if the light/dark bar is leaning on the dark side even if you are in plain sight, but the very first game has the same sort of issue? Where people comparing this to the Dishonored series and felt that this Thief entry wasn't as good or something?

ok
Since you haven’t played the originals obviously you won’t get why fans of the series didn't care for the reboot. So me listing the points will go over your head.

-levels in the older games even some deadly shadows were quite big interconnected levels. Reboot levels are segemented outside maybe 2 levels.

-besides light in dark the older games had different surfaces that made different levels of noise. In reboot you only need to avoid glass otherwise crouch walk or swoop across levels.

-rope arrows, older games besides deadly shadows you can use on any wooden surface. Reboot is fixed points

-story in all three thief games are really good. Reboot is a nonsensical mess.
mutual hate made normalized

but i loved the game.
there are some games that fall victim to the crowd's loud opinion and so everyone accept it cuz its the only SEEMINGLY NOTICIBLE one.

but today we pity the fact that these type of games arent made anymore, and we miss it and return to this discussion board
as if this game was worth more than what we thought it were back in the day
I don’t recall any mutual hate for the reboot, pretty sure those that didn’t care for the direction just didn’t purchase it.

There are plenty of stealth focused games out there being made by indies like gloomwood.

Issue is that stealth as a genre isn’t popular which is why a lot of AAA devs haven’t bothered with them, or add combat along with it.

So the original Thief games were some of the first games I ever played, and both my parents loved the og games. None of use have any dislike towards this game, and honestly I love the direction it took. The other games at times feel like they have a bit of an identity crisis between weather it wants to be fantasy or steam-punk, and I like how it just decides to be a Victorian-esc game

Reboot is a poor thief game but average stealth game. Thief was always fantasy steampunk it’s setting is unique. That said the original game wasn’t always a stealth game hence the odd mix up of things compared to its sequel.

Regardless of the setting mechanically it still holds up as is the level design something I can’t say for the reboot. Which has some fantasy elements in it and steam punk but less of it.

The shadow system is game sucks. If guard is looking in your direction, after a while, he will suddenly see you. even if you are perfectly hiding in the shadow.
With the open city hub, the developers had a chance create something akin to the "Life of the party" from Thief 2. But all we got is a city where your movements are severely restricted to a few chosen paths, and you can't stay on rooftops for long, you always has to come back down to the street, so instead of feeling like a master thief, you feel like a klutz.
I remember when Thief 1 came out, I had the little keyboard controls pad in front of my Windows 98 machine, doing the tutorial, and feeling super spooked by the zombies in the second mission as an 8 year old. I loved every minute of Thief 1 and grew up with it.

I loved Thief 4 as well. It hit all the right points while streamlining a lot of the jank. It felt good and satisfying to play and I adored mission 5. I think most people don't like it because it wasn't faithful enough to Thief 1 and I don't blame them. It didn't hit EVERY mark, and some people value certain things more than I do, and don't value the things that I do. The story isn't the best, but it isn't terrible either. Erin was a bit of a miss, even for me.

Overall, I loved it. I wish it kept going. The new voice actor for Garret wasn't bad by any means, he did a great job, but nothing will be the original voice actor.
people complain about the story in reviews, maybe thats why

They missed every mark from the original trilogy. They should have just made something unrelated to the ip.

Narrative is only one of the few issues the game has.

Like what? You're Garret. You suck at combat. You sneak around. You steal stuff. You blackjack guards and deal with the bodies. You deal with light sources and try to stay in shadows. Sound isn't as prominent but still enough. In fact I'd say they perfected a lot of the original marks, like adding collectibles and rewarding "Ghost" playsyles.
Garret in this reboot acts nothing like the original so they could have named him anything. They didn’t perfect anything levels are less vertical compared to the originals not to mention no loading zones for missions/level progression.

Guess what dishonored 1 and 2 you still stuff also and sneak around guess it’s a better thief game then.
