Mantle
I don't know if i'm going mad or not but didn't this game originally support the Mantle API? I just started the game up for the first time in a long time and was wondering why the option for it was gone... If it was there i'm guessing it was removed as Mantle is more or less dead now, a shame really because on AMD cards it used to boost framerate considerably.

GCN 3/4/5 (380-Fury/RX 480-580/Vega) actually perform worse in Mantle than in DX11 in Thief.

Also, Mantle support was removed from AMD drivers in May 2019.

Mantle is automatic, if it can run it runs, if it can't, it doesn't

It's like asking how to turn on directx, it's a background part of how the gpu itself functions with the software, not a setting you have an option to play with

True, the game has to support Mantel if not, it's not needed.

Thanks for the quick replies. I swear blind I remember a tick box being there on my old card as an option but I'm probably wrong.

My old brain isn't mad lol.

Oh well it doesn't matter it's not like it doesn't work with Rx vega, just wondered why it was gone. It's either a driver issue on these newer cards or Eidos removed it.

Thanks again.

I knew that AMD abandoned Mantle once Vulkan and DX12 came on the scene, Vulkan development started from Mantle code. I didn't realise that AMD had actually removed support from drivers though.

Thanks for the reply.

Sniper Elite 3 supported Mantel, I'm not sure if its still active or, not? My game doesn't seem to run like it used to, anymore. No support for it now, could very well be why.

On a not so related note, the game manages some impressive gains with Multi GPU SLI. Just wish more current games would benefit quite as much.

"GCN 3/4/5 (380-Fury/RX 480-580/Vega) actually perform worse in Mantle than in DX11 in Thief."
Nonsense with zero proofs. My RX480 actually performs better with Mantle, +5fps average in benchmark, +10fps maximum
Cryiox Dec 15, 2019 @ 4:10am
5 fps for a 480 when the average fps is 140 or smth is close to margin of error.

And anyway, the benchmark is unrepresantative of actual game performance. The game will never be as heavy or CPU intensive.

forgot to mention, WQHD resolution, all maxed except SSAA Low.
average fps is around 52 in benchmark and with this fps +5 frames per second is clearly visible.

Anyways, Mantle support in games is horrible in my opinion. BF4, for example, stopped detecting mantle, and fallback to DX11 with any mantle libraries in folder. DX12 and Vulkan are so much better in terms of support.

Kind of a late replay, but still on point. Today, it is hard to find AMD drivers that have Mantle and TrueAudio support.
BUT, if one has an AMD RX 240/250/260/280 card, when doing a fresh Windows install, the default 17.11 drivers will be installed for those cards.
One can then swap the RX 200 series card and place a 300/400 card instead, which is supported by those drivers. Once done, it is possible to revert back the Thief game updates to the 1.4/1.5 and try out Mantle and TrueAudio.
I will get back with some results for Mantle.
