Red mage still use mid level magic?
Do they only learn the mid tier black and white magic or can they learn higher tier?

I dumped my red mage for white once I heard of the higher-level limit. Would love to learn of a legitimate way to get around this barrier with the red mage.

No, there's no way around the high-level limit, since Red Mages were designed with that limit to keep them balanced. If they could use melee AND both kinds of magic as effectively as Fighters or dedicated Mages, there'd be no reason to use any other class. They're meant to be back-ups, lightening the load for the White Mage if they need it, and hitting the enemy in the face (With or without Magic) when they have some time to breathe.

it's been like this since the very first game, don't act so surprised.

As people have said, red mages can never go beyond lvl 5 magic, just like scholar cant go beyond lvl 3 magic, the Knight cant go beyond lvl 1 white magic and so on, its just the limitations of the class, there is no way around it.

Red Mages also have a better choice of armor early in the game, specifically elemental protection being able to equip Ice Armor and Flame Mail. This makes them stronger healers in boss fights, especially against bosses with strong elemental attacks. I do like the idea of going White Mage for the dungeon for the larger mana pool then switching to Red Mage for the boss fight for the increased durability.
