it's been like this since the very first game, don't act so surprised.
Red Mages also have a better choice of armor early in the game, specifically elemental protection being able to equip Ice Armor and Flame Mail. This makes them stronger healers in boss fights, especially against bosses with strong elemental attacks. I do like the idea of going White Mage for the dungeon for the larger mana pool then switching to Red Mage for the boss fight for the increased durability.
