I have heard of these wooden planks and i was wondering where they are, how they activate and what they do.

The wooden planks are mostly hidden within secret passages. You collect the wooden planks for the end game.

-- Spoiler --

After you beat the final boss, "The castle begins to collapse." Then you rush to escape the castle by crossing over many gaps. In order to cross these gaps, you need the planks.

also, what does the spae bar do.
The space bar is a head rest.
Strangs planks...placed in secret areas.
In essence, secret items...in any game I've ever played, secret items and ares are optional.
If you choose to explore, your reward is more loot and items.

But now it's not a choice. It's a forced mechanic of "Now you HAVE to search every single room, every single floor, to every end, or we don't let you beat the game."

Tasteless design decision on part of the devs for this game.
Absolutely tasteless.

I say this now as I am going round, and round, and round in the armory level trying to figure out how to get to the plank which has been teleported to the top of a pyramid. If I do not figure it out, I do not get to beat the game. Doesn't matter if I beat all the bosses and manage not to die once, I don't get to enjoy any rewards if I don't do this mega fetch-quest.

Even then, there's no way of seeing how many planks you already have.
This whole plank thing is really killing the game for me in one fell blow in this moment.

You will get the Achievement "Survivalist" if you collected all wooden planks.
@ tons0phun the plank on the top of the pyramid can be accessed one floor above, took me a while to figure that one out too ;) and you dont necessarily NEED the planks in order to finish the game, once you beat last boss you technically win, but if you manage to escape you get a little boost in your points at the end...and thats pretty much it :\ I havent managed to see another benefit for getting all the planks other than just points...

How many planks are there?

Too many, or too heavily hidden for the type of scheme the dev implemented.

12 in all
they should add another bonus
12 in all? So, three per dungeon? That would be nice to know, since i can't go back once a boss is killed...
I think one level might've had 2 planks in it because I really only remember collecting 2 planks in Act 4...unless I accidently collected one along the way o,O

to get the plank at the top of the pyramid continue down the levels and you will find buttons that say when you click them "Something Happened". One of these result in the plank being teleported down to the ground where you can get it

hope this helped :)
12 planks one in every floor, and searching for secrets is what makes this game fun!

By defeating the last dragon you basically beat the game. It does not matter if you escape or not - you still beat it.
