I think it is hard in places, what difficulty do/did you play on?
It adds a bunch of new elements to the Classic Doom formula but is kinda samey feeling in theme due to the low number of textures and flats.
I would highly recommend it. Mostly because the added mechanic of inventory items and the alternative fire modes from the Tome of Power.
If you mean whether your PC will run this, yes, it will. It's an old game with good compatibility.
Is it hard?
It has 5 different difficulty levels. I'm sure you'll find one that's good for you
Is it fun?
For sure. It's a game I keep coming back to despite its age, can't say the same about other 90s games.
Is it good for casual gaming?
The controls can be a bit weird to get used to and counter-intuitive. I'm sure they can be re-mapped to a controller though. Other than that, yeah, it's not super hardcore or anything, and it does have 5 difficulty levels.
I fired up Heretic with no source port. It automatically defaults to use dosbox to run the game. I'm not sure if dosbox must be downloaded prior to starting or if it is included in the game. Regardless, the game starts with dosbox.
I fire up the first episode and mission.
I touched the mouse.....the game froze.
Restarted the game and tried again. This time I just used the keyboard to play. Yeah. Tank controls with the directional keys.
Game didn't crash.
Conclusion....... It will run as long as you don't touch the mouse to look. Lol.
Just use GZDOOM to play and enjoy.
I had this problem where moving the mouse crashes the game and was able to fix it by running it using the latest version of dosbox (currently v0.74-3) instead of launching the game through Steam (which will use the dosbox v0.72 that is bundled with this game).
After installing the newer version of dosbox you can create a shortcut with these properties set (using the paths for your system of course):
Target: "C:\Program Files (x86)\DOSBox-0.74-3\DOSBox.exe" .\base\heretic.exe -conf .\base\heretic.conf -fullscreen -exit
Start in: "F:\SteamLibrary\steamapps\common\Heretic Shadow of the Serpent Riders"
You can use GZDoom as others have suggested (I'd recommend at least giving it a try), but if you insist on playing the vanilla version of the game you can try a newer version of dosbox.
Yes. Classic. It's a fantasy horror version of Doom. One of the best ever made.
