The right way to play heretic
I just want to ask what people think is the proper way to play this game. Do you guys save/load every level in case you die, or do you not load when you die on a level? I realise that the game is a lot harder if you do not load. It seems like they designed every level to be restarted as there are weapon drops hidden within every single map. Does anyone restart their loadout on every map to try and completely master this game?

The right way to play heretic is to load the game up and play the game in a way you find most enjoyable.

you are right every heretic and doom map are designed for pistol start.

I use inventory items as much as possible if I own more than one of that particular item on that level (and everyone should too!). There's no point in keeping five tomes of power to yourself since you can only start a new level with one of each item you had on the previous one.

Theres no right or wrong way imo. Each player has to find their own way with every game no matter what that is as game play styles vary from game to game and player to player

The last time I played through Heretic (GZDoom) I didn't save on first playing the level. If I died (rarely) I'd start over and then save if I recognized the point at which I'd previously died. It certainly increases the tension first time around.

But also with a trackball mouse. It's a must.

There is no "right" way, the developers allowed you to play however you wanted.
I suggest you a good engine port that feels exactly like the original but without DOSBOX. Try ChocolateDoom. On the ChocolateDoom webpage there's also a version for Heretic & Hexen. It really is the most authentic port to play this game on modern Operating systems. Just download the files from the website, extract it in a folder called Heretic and just add your Heretic WAD file in. That's all. :) Runs way better than with DOS BOX.

What great about these oldschool games (also Doom, Blood, Duke Nukem etc..) is that u can play with save/load, or "pistol start". I personally play evey level from scratch and on high difficulty without save. Is challenging and more fun for me. :crowing:

I was hoping for a comment like this. It is exactly why I made the thread. Good on you

Real men beat the entire game on Black Plague in one go with just the staff.

(all joking aside, I would love to see it happen.)
