Almost 4 years later, doesn't Microsoft now own the rights to Heretic? IdSoftware was the Heretic publisher.

Yes they do.. but it has nothing to do with id being the publisher. Heretic and Hexen rights belong to Activision. They had it ever since they acquired Raven Software, the developers of those games. Now it's all back together.

Activision had Raven stuck working on Call of Duty Multiplayer stuff for over a decade. I hope Microsoft pull Raven out of Activision's A$$ and have them doing a reboot of Heretic/Hexen with Doom Eternal budget and engine.

In a recent interview Phil Spencer showed interest in reviving some old Acti IP's and referenced Hexen specifically by name. Crossing fingers here.
