Immunity to splash damage makes it able to not care about being in range of explosions and the ability to stay in stealth while attacking is one of the only ways to make progress at higher difficulty tiers.
If you're not soloing, siege, ninja and sniper are the three you need most and then fill in whatever for fourth. Higher difficulty you will need stealth for most missions, sniper to pick off critical targets and siege to take out the biggest groups.
Brawler, science and assault all feel like support to me; though if you're playing on lower difficulty it's not as obvious what their drawbacks are. Science can't keep up in combat, brawler is just a less stealthy ninja and assault sits somewhere between sniper and siege without being as uniquely good as either of those in their categories for range and group damage.
The game is really RNG based though and I don't play it often anymore. You can get pretty close to the end and just lose with bad luck.
