"Black Screen at start
If you experience a black screen when starting the game, you might not have the latest Windows Media Player (11 or 12), which you need in order for the intro movie to start. This normally comes with your normal windows update, however for XP you’ll need to do this manually. After updating the windows media player, please run the player ones to complete the setup, before starting the game. "
First of all, thanks to Semprini for pointing out some workarrounds! :)
@TotalBarracuda: The k-light codex can deactivated at the path Semprini mentioned:

Last but not least, if you are experiencing running the game on the laptop, it could be because the game is using the standard graphic card, instead of the one you might have additionally in your laptop. You can change this within your video settings. Please always use the best graphical settings and the best graphic card you have.
Best,
Anna (LE-Larissa)
