The simply Turn Based/Real time option switch was sorely missed from MMX. Turn based works great for nasty creatures but is laborious when you have to fight 28 weak insects.
That said: I'd prefer a turnbased combat anytime anyways.
having just played through all M&Ms from 3 to 9, I can't believe how people like 6. That was EASILY the worst one by far. It was so incomplete and had nothing but piles of enemies everywhere for no real reason. it had painfully tedious dungeons with painfully tedious swarms of enemies. it had those ridiculous portraits. it had no races, and the fewest classes out of any of them. 7 improved on it in pretty much every way. 8 as well. even 9 was better than 6.
which one's have you actually played? any of them? what does 6 do better than 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, or even 9? the only thing wrong with 9 is that it's VERY unpolished and a little too easy to break quests. otherwise has some of the best music, story, and character progression, especially from the latter ones. 3 will probably always be my favorite, though.
seems like you're just trolling, you probably haven't actually played any of them and just didn't like X being a turn based game. boohoo.
I also do not understand why so many people want a Dragon Age or Skyrim like game. Of course this games are great. But just play them instead. Why do we need a Dragon Age in a Might and Magic world? Come on, the world of Might and Magic is clearly the weakest part of the series. The story is lame, the world is changing with every new developer just recycling names and races. The cool thing on M&M X is that it is a retro game. If I want an AAA game I would prefer it from developers with experience in AAA games (like the makers of Witcher, Dragon Age or Skyrim).
I didn't try 1-5 realy. M&M X is good. (I play it again at the moment) But I also miss the option to flee. I don't like situations where the enemies, come out of nowhere!
The world changed between VIII and IX, and this is told in VIII... Although M&M IX is not the world, we have now (Ashan) the reason for that is, that 3DO has gone for good, and didn't have the opportunity to work out the new world in M&M IX. So Ubisoft did that part.
I didn't read the worldchange between III (Tera) and IV (Xeen), and V (Xeen) and VI (Erathia), though, if there even is a story... Since Heroes V, the M&M-World is Ashan afaik.
To the attack: MIGHT-focused parties were boring until part IX, imho, because you didn't have special melee-actions available (just attack.) There were effects, but they're passive and chance-based. And the melee-attacks didn't show any animations.
Melee in X is much more interesting, because of warfare. You still have no animations, but at least you have some special effects with different actions available, and they're not chance- but action-based. so you can much more rely on them. I like the combat (and movement)-system of VI-IX more, than that of X, though.
So I wish, we could have a M&M XI with a free-movement-system of VI-IX, but with the interesting combat of X. It's important to direct-attack, though. I don't like a combat-system as we have in wizardry, where you plan the actions, and target spells (especialy aoe-spells) and 'till the spell is cast, the enemy is somewhere else or the spell can't be cast anymore. (I hate that in Wizardry. You plan cone-based spells, walk, and then can't cast them anymore, but you can't change the order. Only 8 is an exception, if you play in continous combat.)
there is an in-game explanation for the world change from III to IV/V, but I won't spoil it.
Erathia and Ashan both come from HofM&M which I don't have much experience with. neither is explained in the M&M games.
I don't like the free movement system it feels too exploitable and not constrained enough, but I can understand why someone would like it.
Yes X definitely has way more interesting combat.
