Yeah I tried googling it at first but the only answer I found there was Shadow xD

It's a poorly written riddle. Your answer, "Shadow", is a much better answer than darkness. Things that grow, engulf, and restrict sight: shadow, fog, mist, cloud, tree, leaves, even hair. But darkness? Darkness is a state, not something that grows. It's stupid.

I believe the same riddle actually was in MM3 as well. With the same answer (I had to look it up back in the days, since it was highly illogical even back then).

I guess some of the riddles are thus a tribute to the older games.

I agree with IonStorm, I actually tried fog, mist and clouds before trying the dark... which was wrong, because it want's darkness >_< Simply a problem of computer not being able to recognize my syntax, but I'd wish they'd add a few words to the answer dictionary.
