How to use companions?

I think, I skipped some hint or smth. I'm 17 hours in the game and I don't understand what to do with companions. I have a goblin chef, that take 3% of my gold, doing nothing. Once I hired a horse, but had to send it home, because griffin can't carry it. Some quest givers are also tag along. How do I use companion abilities? What goblin is suppose to do? Are there any companion related quests? (not from quest givers, but, let's say, I'm walking around with goblin, and at some location he gives me the quest that I won't get if I won't take the goblin with me).

If the companion has an activated ability, click on them to use it. The goblin's ability is that he gives you the well-rested buff from resting anywhere rather than having to rest in a tavern to get it.

The horse gives you an extra inventory page..More carrying capacity...which is just a second tab in your inventroy..I am sure the goblin has some function. Hirelings do not ever fight in any battles. that I know of.. At least at my stage of the game they have not yet. Just read their functions when you hire them and you will know what they do. My scout hireling lets me see 1 more space on the map..and makes enemys detect me in 1 space less. He has no ability buttons because his skills are always activated.

Right now the 2 hirelings I have I will never drop most likely.

One is for a quest (lol never completing it) that kills me +10% from kills and costs nothing.
Other is a chick who costs 100g upfront and 7% of gold I find. But she increases the gold I find by 10% and increases the chances I find enchanted gear by 15%

Ran across a couple others in towns and the world that seem like they would be nice, just not on the level I have now imo

Thanks guys! Great info. Where can I read about hirelings abilities ingame? Is there any site that have a full list of them? Google didn't help me with this :)
