Types of bonuses on items include stat increases, % chances on block/hit/being hit to inflict various status effects, resistances, and damage boosts in the form of elemental damage and small amounts of splash elemental damage. There may be others but this is what I see mostly. You will find normal quality items much more than the others. There is a hireling that increases your chance to find better items slightly, however. I think they are accessible in Act 2.
Relic items earn XP while equipped, and can be leveled up to level 4 (Of what I've found. I imagine they all stop at 4). Each level they either earn a new bonus or upgrade an existing one. They are quite powerful and I'm willing to bet some have effects that you can't find on random items dropped as loot or bought in shops. Also a relic stays upgraded so you can switch them between members of the party if you see fit.
