Spell critical damage multiplier seems wonky (and OP)
Has anyone else noticed that sometimes, spell crits do way, WAY too much damage?

Example: My freemage's Lightning Bolt has a tooltip damage range of 52-109, and +46% Crit Damage Bonus according. But I sometimes get >250 damage crits, meaning the actual crit damage bonus has to be at LEAST +140%!

The Master and Grandmaster levels are very powerful and balance is there in this game.

At the risk of creating a word puddle, there are multiple multipliers that multiply with each other. I do not have the exact mechanics, but the game appears to be balanced. The exception is if you advance to a higher level (expert -> master -> grandmaster) but are still working lower areas. Also if you make your skill point investments wisely the game becomes easier (in a good way). There are similar high multipliers for the melee and range capabilities at higher levels... hits that do 500 damage... that sort of thing. There are foes that will challenge you at each level.

There are no more active updates coming for this game, as far as I know, so if you have played enough, at the highest difficulty, that it actually becomes too easy... maybe it is time to move on.

Basic crit damage is 100%, if a spell has +46% bonus, then it crits for +146%, so a 100 dmg hit becomes a 246 dmg crit, so it looks just about right.

It does look right as far as the numbers go. However, melee crits do NOT get 100% base crit damage (this is easy to test with maces), yet the character sheet displays crit damage bonus the same way for melee and magic.

So I wonder if this is a bug, especially since this does cause some balance issues with enemy spell-casters randomly one-shotting your guys, especially in the early-mid game when you don't have many options to counter them.

There are specific critical hit defenses you can pursue, optionally. The survivability of your characters depends upon many factors and the methods of survival offer many choices, some better than others depending upon the character and party, as well as the foes faced.

The major defense mechanisms against a single powerful hit include: armor (or specific resistance), lots of hit points, making the attempt to hit the character miss, damage absorption, immediate damage replenishment and resurrection.

You may want to read posts more carefully before replying to them.

Duly noted that you did not find my more general reply helpful. I did not limit it to physical armor. What I said was "armor (or specific resistance)". Apparently it was not clear that the specific magical one shot you were suffering was included in that. For magic attacks there is magical resistance, as well as other magical defense mechanisms, like immediate damage replenishment in the Earth realm and damage absorption spells.

I generally play with magical characters, like 3 of them in party, so defense against not just magical but also physical one-shots is a thing. I was telling you that you need to have a defensive strategy for each character involving a potential variety of potential spell and physical defenses using spells and other methods.

It was not that I did not read you post. I chose to give a more general reply because the defensive strategy needs to be based upon all foes faced, not just ones that particularly give you trouble at one point in the game. In using skills to deal with aspects of the game it is important, in this game, to always be aware of the big picture and not just address one thing, because skill points are limited and you cannot do everything... not even close.

However, the bottom line is you did not like my post or find the advice I tried to share helpful. It was my intent to be helpful and I did not succeed at that. That is definitely on me and I will work to do better in any future threads I may reply to..
