A while back one of the developers visited and I read him the riot act about this very negative feature, admonishing that at a minimum that the process of forcing the player to install uplay and obtain an unsolicited Ubisoft account should be seamless. After that (probably by coincidence since they were already working on it) things improved and the complaints about connectivity issues like you ran into died off.
The other, terrible thing is that this problem manifests just as you hit it, at the end of act one by blocking the player from moving onto Act 2.
Finally, the worst thing of all is that whenever the Ubisoft servers are not working properly, and that does happen, you will get this issue even if you submit to all of the demands and have a valid Ubisoft account and uplay installed and running in the background. This one "feature" has generated more player dissatisifaction towards this game than 100 typical games on Steam. Many found it demeaning to be forced to open an account they did not want after already purchasing the game and to be forced to install uplay in order to play it when it was for no other reason than to not have the game blocked. Finally, this method of enforcing this connectivity that you ran into is exceptionally cruel, stopping the flow of the game at the end of Act I, after you have gotten into the game play, rather than requiring it, if it is going to be required, immediately in time for the player, if he or she wishes, to return the game for refund. This is all very shady business practice at best and has nothing to do with the game itself which is actually pretty good in spite of the huge number of players who hate it passionately due entirely to the above connectivity reasons.
It is always the same with this company, lots of great ideas and people involved in their games - overshadowed by terrible leadership decisions.
I never really had an issue with this game before now.
It is incredible how unstable their service is. You would think such issues would slowly be fixed, not get worse.
However, there are different types of DRM, and the ones that Uplay uses tend to cause a bit of problems for people, but that appears to be due to their server stability/updates, rather than the DRM itself.
Case in point, I havent had any issues before(several years), and now I suddenly have(due to updates, most likely).
