How do you use the digger to dig up seeds reliably

Why is it so difficult to dig out an old seed so I can plant a new one. I’m lucky if I get one out

It took me a while to realize this: You don't have to boost to move the digger when it's in the ground. You can use the right stick to move it around slowly and freely.

Hmm, a quick follow up question regarding the digger:
How do i dig the "dead" seeds which have roots which you can destroy with
the digger but as soon as you start digging (or better boosting the digging) it comes back to me.
I don't even need to retract the damn thing as soon as i'm on this dead seed (it has dark purple seeds on the ground with which i can't interact) and boost the digging stops.
