If you're on PC (kb + mouse), hold down the left Shift key then pull the mouse towards while also holding down the left mouse button. You can also further shape the ball by doing the same thing but holding down Shift + the right mouse button.

Shift and left mouse increases or decreases spin.
Shift and right mouse increases or decreases loft :)
