I'm hoping that the choices you get when you add a player to the match includes another one of your MyPlayers, because that means we'll be able to play "hotseat" matches, with a friend swapping positions with you in your seat at your PC, which has been a feature of classic PC golf sims since the 1990s.
Really hope this is present in the final game.

2-4 players, playing couch coop, each with their individually created player?
I can absolutely confirm that two or more players just like you described is possible. The first player, whoever it is that owns the game on Steam, can be set as "Golfer", then anyone else you add, whether they're another MyPlayer or a celebrity golfer among the list that's included like Rory, etc., can be added as 'Guests'. As each Guest player is added to the list to play in the match, the game asks you what type of controller they're going to use. As far as I can tell so far, there are no restrictions on Guest players and their advancement in skills. However, all the golfers who are in the match must draw their skill upgrade points from the master account, i.e. the Steam owner. They're all "shared" so you'd have to sit there and make sure everyone gets their fair share when buying new clothing, equipment, whatever.
Also remember that this is very different when playing with friends online through the internet, in which case they wouldn't be listed as 'Guests' (I think). I could be wrong about that; I haven't hosted an online coop match myself yet.
Lastly, you can also have other players, like other MyPlayers you've created, join as a 'Ghost', in which case I believe the game's A.I. plays for them. So you can simulate a twosome or threesome or whatever and let the computer control them.
Hope that helps.
