solo\lan mode with hamachi

Has anybody managed to play coop with VPN? My firend and I live in different cities and we really want to just have a private game and while also being pc nerds we wanted to make it work by making a VPN but we still haven't done it. We encounter two types of errors. The first is something about the client being of different tier of local network (Class C) and after tinkering with VPN aliases we managed to get into the same subnet and we even get a connection but it failes after 4 retries.

Try using lobby Peer-2-Peer, though, be sure to read the popup that appears about lobby p2p

We want to try and get solo achievements by playing solo\lan mode together so I aim to play through VPN.

Achievements works even with Solo/Lan. However, if you want to play with others, then use Lobby Peer-2-Peer system. You don't need to setup anything up, as it runs trough Steam's own networking API.

using Hamachi is just complicating your process from the get go, if you try using it trough "solo/lan" mode. You are better off using Hamachi if you use "listen server".

My only recommendation is either Peer-2-Peer lobby or "Lobby Reservation"

I was just curious on what Lobby Reservation refers to... do I need to port forward for that option? How does it differentiate from just the regular Peer - 2 - Peer system?

Lobby Reservation will reserve a slot on a dedicated server, that runs on "lobby" mode. if it succeeds, you will be able to join it.

Oh ok, thats interesting, does it automatically search for the dedicated server with the lowest ping first?
